The return to childhood.

I have rolled my eyes at boy bands and teen stars, pretty much since I was a teen. But there was one group that won my heart: New Kids on the Block. I was the right age, and had a best friend neighbor who was four years my senior.

We would talk about our “boyfriends” Joey and Jordan. I compulsively collected their trading cards, and then put them, in order, in plastic sleeves, in a binder, which I kept under my bed. I had t-shirts, dolls, and a sleeping bag. I loved the New Kids on the Block.

When they had a special “Pay Per View” concert, I begged my mother to let me host a party. My friends (only the girls) from school came over to watch. With our crimped hair and denim jackets, we sang along at the top of our lungs, and shrieked when they turned around and shook their behinds.

And then they faded into boy band oblivion.

Now they are having a reunion tour. I thought it was a cruel April Fools Day joke. But in fact they will be touring the country this fall. They are also playing for free in NYC next week.

There is not a debate with my mother and I about going or not going. It’s more along the lines of “do we go down the night before or board a train at 4 a.m.?”

I can’t wait to be 11 year’s old again.
